It’s because they’re having to pay the actors and writers and directors more, right?

    Right?

How I justify my home lab costs. Even though I could run it much slimmer.

Yeah I’ve gone down to just paying $10 a month for a seedbox. I’ve kept my homelab costs extremely low cos I really just use it for jellyfin currently. The costs will grow though cos I’ve inadvertently really gotten into networking now but at least that’s more productive than burning my money on endlessly rising subscription fees

My Jellyfin server’s monthly fee went up 70% too. What’s 70% of zero, again?

technically your server’s monthly fee is however much you spend on electricity for it

It is never zero, unless you steal it. If you produce it yourself it costs you depreciation of your equipment (ie you had previous investments)

I started looking for more HDDs to add to my NAS and the pricing made my blood run cold.

Yeah, my advice would always be to buy used enterprise-grade drives with SMART reports. Data center drives get swapped out for minor issues, or just for operating hours with no issues. Plenty of life left in them for home lab use, especially if you’re running something like TrueNAS with active health monitoring and load balancing.

What’s a good place to buy these in small lots? Or does it not matter to use a mismash of individually purchased drives for NAS purposes?

                I usually buy on eBay.

For RAID it’s more important to use matched drives, but this is one of the reasons I avoid RAID, it’s basically legacy technology with few real benefits. ZFS is better, or btrfs. With ZFS on TrueNAS in particular, drive pools are managed very competently and there’s no need to match models or age or anything, with the only caveat being that if drives are mirrored, the size will be limited by the smallest drive. You can even mix drive speeds within a pool, the system will adjust read/write load balancing to meet the drive specs.

Don’t use RAID, use a modern drive pooling system.

also the seasons only being 8-10episodes each(most with poor writing, acting in later seasons), and 1-2 years in between season doesnt justify the cost anyways.
