My genuinely unpopular opinion that I will not be changing: If you are fat, it is your fault. I fully understand (at least to the extant modern research has gone on the matter) the genetic differences in hunger receptors, fat accumulation, serotonin deficiencies from vagus nerve disorders, etc.

All of the above are easily treatable, half of them with OTC medication. If you eat more than the calories necessary to run your body, you will gain weight. There are no phantom calories, you are snacking the whole fucking day.

My genuinely unpopular opinion that I won’t be changing: if you’re fat that’s 100% okay!!! Absolutely no moral condemnation is warranted and anybody being a dick about it is just a mean-spirited cockhead grasping at the shallowest possible ‘justifications’ to feel superior to someone!!!

Where the fuck do Lemmy users get off on thinking they’re as progressive as it gets but the moment women, Muslims or fat people are mentioned they turn into the most concavebrained chuds imaginable who can’t stand it when people who are different to them exist happily as equal members of society??? Pathetic.

Well. Lemmings are known to have strong opinions. And like most people, they have their blind spots for who they judge. I know I judge “conservative christians” too hard due to bad actors.

          known to have strong opinions

Oh there may be, but sometimes the light shines how incorrect their opinion is. Like all media sites, progressiveness has nothing to do with how much a dick/ignorant prick they are. In some cases, factual proof isnt sufficient because it just how “they are wired” (ignorance; hatred; etc).

Can’t really say I agree with you.

For one, most people that become obese are overfed as children when they don’t know any better, so blaming them for the obesity that was thrust upon them by heartless and inconsiderate parents, is just like a step too far.

For two, the nutritional content of food has decreased dramatically in the last 40 years, so many people could be induced to overeat due to lack of essential nutrients.

and for three, there is an entire industry of people with PhDs who are paid good money to craft food that never satiates.

People that become obese in the western world are getting hit with a threefer. Adding blame to them on top of that? It’s just too much.

Stop infantilizing people. Shit like this is half the reason there are immature adults that do not know how to take accountability for anything.

Not every obese person is the person you are picturing in your head.

I’m not saying don’t be hateful, I’m saying understand who you’re hating first. Be a little selective.

Yes, some people do have glandular problems or underlying health issues.

No, that is not the vast majority of obese people.

I mean it kinda is your fault as in you can change it with enough willpower, but just like with smoking tobacco, constantly being exposed to advertisement and temptation is definitely not your fault and governments need to do something about it.

I like the way you’ve gussied up “objectively wrong as proven by science” into “my unpopular opinion.”

When your opinion contradicts known fact, it’s no longer an opinion. It’s a fantasy.

You can’t even change your “opinion” when provided with excellent reasons to, yet you judge people for not overcoming their biological imperatives.

A few more facts before I go: I’m not overweight, and you are a douche.

beyond genetic differences, I understand there’s also a growing body of evidence that a person’s gut microbiome plays a pretty big role in how the body processes food. I heard of a case where someone got a fecal matter transplant, their diet and level of activity didn’t change, and yet they started gaining significant more weight.

Honestly, when I encounter people like that, I just block them and forget that they ever existed.

I usually attempt to either confirm that they are trolling or evil or misinformed, but once I have done, you know, 20% of the amount of effort to get to the bottom of things and I still don’t really feel convinced one way or the other, I just block them.

Oh well, we won’t have any further conversations. Oh darn, oh no.

Yep I’ve had a lot of those. Also people who just want to argue for the sake of arguing. You can tell they don’t really have an interest in the position they’re holding at all. It’s kind of different from ragebaiting? Frustration baiting I guess? They just never listen to reason or deliberately misinterpret what you say to energy vampire the will the argue out of you.

The thinking, mentality and emotions about all this are normal … I know, because I’m getting to the age and experience in life that I feel this way too sometimes …

… the part that is not normal is that many of these people choose not to be polite, considerate, accommodating, compassionate, empathetic or kind and keep these thoughts and ideas to themselves.

Think about it … if I applied every idea or thought that you thought was a good idea, it would satisfy a good percentage of everyone, but it would not be suitable for everyone. The same thing applies to everyone else’s ideas or thoughts. None of our individual ideas will ever perfectly mesh with everyone in society … we all have to learn to accept and live with the idea that we all have to live within certain limits and learn to accommodate others around us and hope that they do the same for us.

We all have to compromise a little bit for one another and that way, we all get to live in a little bit of peace … because due to human nature and our ever expanding ability to screw with one another in ever more creative ways, it’s the best we can hope for.

Perhaps the first step towards any kind of sanity in all this is in first understanding that this is how we all are.

No one is actually going to post a controversial opinion in this thread, because lemmy is just as bad as reddit at cultivating groupthink, if not worse.

Also, while unfettered capitalism certainly deserves some criticism, anyone here criticising it is mostly just creating an untouchable boogeyman to blame for their problems so they don’t have to admit that they could actually be happy and successful if they tried. Anyone who was seriously trying to create a post-capitalist world would be organizing their neighbors in real life, and would rightly see lemmy as a waste of valueable time.

Is it really reddit and lemmy to blame, or is that just how groups of people… do? What else are we communicating for? Ideas meat other ideas, they interfere destructively and constructively, and new consensus is built. Repeat.

To an extent, yes. But also there is the issue of the structure of the voting system. Contrast this to other options, like oldschool forums or stackoverflow.

On stack, the format encourages solving problems - in particular, the problem the question-asker asked. Even if there is some group-think about the “right” way to solve a problem, the question asker ultimately gets to mark the answer that solved their problem, regardless of group approval.

On a traditional forum, even if there was a voting system, there was no heirarchical comment structure and comments weren’t hidden based on popularity. So you had to scroll past every comment, including the ones you disagreed with, and you would typically have to read that comment to understand the whole discussion that was happening.
