That the American Supreme Court is made up of political lifetime appointees is entirely insane
I think most people can agree with the original idea for why it was done that way, though. to protect the court from pressured rulings and repercussions for ruling against government/the powerful.
Unfortunately no one predicted that not only would political parties form, but that one of them would become a force hellbent on undermining the country and overturning it for their foreign masters and interests.
Noone? George Washington warned about them in his farewell address?
I’m sure that they’d have ruled differently if the plaintiff were Orthodox Jewish and the prison goons had shaved off his payots. Fuck the rotten Roberts court.
Nahhhhh the curls can’t be called “payots” that’s too on… shit I can’t finish that phrase in this context, I need an idiom thesaurus. Anyway if this was a TV show they’d say the writing was hacky.
Landor during his five-month prison term in 2020. When he entered the prison system, he carried a copy of an appeals court ruling in another inmate’s case holding that cutting religious prisoners’ dreadlocks violated the federal law.
At his first two stops, officials respected his beliefs. But things changed when he got to the Raymond Laborde Correctional Center in Cottonport, about 80 miles (130 kilometers) northwest of Baton Rouge, for the final three weeks of his term.
A prison guard took the copy of the ruling Landor carried and tossed it in the trash, according to court records. Then the warden ordered guards to cut his dreadlocks. While two guards restrained him, a third shaved his head to the scalp, the records show.
Bro was only in there for five months, everyone else respected his beliefs, until he was sent to another facility for his last 3 weeks in detention. 3 fucking weeks, and they HAD to shave his fucking head? This reeks of racism. Godamn fuck 1312. ACAB gets extended to prison guard bitches too it seems.
This reeks of racism
Its the american prison industrial complex. Its foundation is basically built on it.
Its not shocking that his hair was cut.
Its shocking that he went through two places previously that didnt cut it.
Interesting I thought forcibly cutting hair was a form of assult
Oh it definitely is…it’s just that the Nazis are busy doing Nazi shit…
SCOTUS only cares about religious protections for Evangelicals who don’t balk at fucking kids. Any other religion is SOL.
Not true. Several of the Supremes are associated with Opus Dei, so fascist-friendly retro-Inquisition Catholicism is also favored.
They’re shredding the legitimacy of the United states. Anyone who isn’t their very narrow demographic has no reason to support the regime or it’s foundations
No no, it was always ass. They did this with indigenous religions decades ago prohibiting them from using peyote. Giving kids watered down wine is fine though.
“Freedom of religion, but not your religion.”
All governments, both state and fed, should have policies that have nothing to do with and may often entirely ignore religious preferences. Since religion is arbitrary, it leads to all kinds of crazy things, like it’s against my religion to be incarcerated. Religion should be entirely ignored by lawful regulated process, and should only exist in private.
They don’t though: Certain religions can get lots of preferential treatment at times.
Yes which is insane. Even the motto in god we trust should not appear on anything government related, and it should have nothing to do with if people like it or not. It should be disallowed by default because it’s illegal to do so.
…but some religions are more equal than others /s
Does anyone actually understand what the ruling is arguing? It seems to be arguing that the individuals are not liable since they did not sign a contract.
Honesty it is horrifying that the supreme court is now a political tool. Justices should not have a political party affiliation
Ok I’m not a legal expert and I think this is an abhorrent thing. He should have not had his head shaved.
However the main point of the ruling is that he can’t sue prison in a federal court because at the time it happened it wasn’t technically a federal prison. Which is just a ruling on jurisdiction.
I believe he can still sue other ways.
You can sue in federal court if the act was breaking federal law. This is how most civil rights abuse cases are filed.
Yup. You bet there is an army of asshole lawyers looking for “well, ackshually” technical methods to invalidate the entire bill of rights.
The idea that a fucking PRISON doesn’t have to follow the Bill of Rights for any kind of technicality is just further confirmation that we’re living in a fascist state.
My god is better than your god.
Thanks for reminding me of this verse
it’s the same god.
I think most Christians would probably disagree when you tell them that their God lived on earth and it was a man in Ethiopia named “Haile Salassie” who died in 1974
I didn’t say they were Christians. I meant that Rastafarians consider themselves an abrahamic faith, so they worship the god of Moses and Abraham.
Ja
Well. One is white. Innit.
Gee, I wonder what lines they split the decision down… /s
I saw this on the BBC. I kept looking for some kind of rationale, like maybe he had head lice and it was a threat to a community with so many people in such a tight space. Setting entirely aside that issue, I figured, there had to be a good reason. Nope. At least the BBC did not give one.
So then wouldn’t it just come down to assault? Assault does not have to ‘hurt’. It just means unwanted touching. (If it does hurt, that’s called ‘assault and battery.’ Battering a person meaning to hurt them in some way.) So I suppose they have justifications for that as well, but it wouldn’t have to involve religion. And might be harder to prove/win.
some kind of rationale, like maybe
Regardless of the individual rationale, they have a duty to accommodate religious beliefs.
Your example is just as bad as force feeding a vegan beef because they are anemic. Yes technically it’s “better” for them, but you have every other option to deal with it that doesn’t involve infringing on their rights. Don’t be a lazy, criminally negligent dick.
Lol like hummus and spinach. Very cheap and high in iron.
…or just pills with iron in them. Even cheaper and long shelf life.
Exactly. This is a “no beef is the first thing we thought of” situation.
It was for lols and putting that n word in his place. No matter what the law says prisoners are slaves and have no rights. For the 1000s abused its extremely rare for it to hit the news or go viral.
Not saying I agree with it. I was in that system in Alabama as a teen and in my 20s. I never went to jail for something I actually did.
