Can’t say that was my favorite thing to have staring back at me on the toilet, but I appreciate the thought.

This is where they lost me. I got sent a list of my donations, and I was short… Blew my mind that they actually counted what we were giving. While the preacher is driving a Cadillac and a big part of the congregation, us included, were driving cars held together with hopes and prayers. F U, I’m out.

USA churches are so weird. There’s a dictatorship-style leadership, mandatory donations, megachurches the size of a pop concert venue, gullible folk and actors willingly simulating an epileptic seizure when the pastor touches them, and Florida’s tiny Key West island has 20 places of worship in a 10km area. The only things I like over there are Gospel churches, and that’s probably not unique. And circling back to donations, folk as individuals are meant to benefit from the movement, not sustain it financially. That job is for benefactors

As someone who was raised in that shit and knows almost every one of those scamming fucking grifters, that’s an outstanding song.

Stop hitting yourself Stop hitting yourself Stop hitting yourself Stop hitting yourself

Jesus drove out the money changers and sellers, saying they had made God’s house “a den of robbers.”

“You cannot serve God and money.” Matthew 6:24 Meaning money can become a rival master.

“The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.” 1 Timothy 6:10 Often misquoted as “money is evil.” It says the love of money is the danger.

Warnings against religious leaders exploiting people: Jesus criticises leaders who “devour widows’ houses” while appearing holy. Mark 12:38-40

Giving is supposed to be sincere, not performative or forced: “God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:7

That guy’s pretty cool for protecting people from drinking sewage. But I dislike how he goes on to moralise in favour of realism and against conscious spirituality. When people look for an “objective” reality to the world around them, they become vulnerable to manipulation by authority figures, both secular and religious. To be protected against abuse, people must acknowledge and take control of their own subjectivity. They must choose their own beliefs, and take an active role in deciding the perceptions that their beliefs create. Surrendering your perceptions to the “higher power” of “objective reality” is dangerous, because rich people, priests, and politicians will try to manipulate your view of “objective reality” for their personal gain.
