it’s built within a trust system where an individual is expected to not shoplift (due to shaming culture) as public face and reputation matters to them.

It’s because there are tons of security cameras and a super high prosecution rate. It has nothing to do with “shame” or “face” and it drives me crazy when people say stuff like this

People shoplift here every day. Convenience store clerks have basically big paintballs to lob at shoplifters to mark them as they run.
