I don’t disagree with Mr Beast being a scammer and abuser, and I also don’t disagree with a domain not being untrustworthy just because it’s a .com domain.
That being said, I should point out that the news/media isn’t exactly reliable. NBC is no exception. Even if the article is true (which it most likely is), I wouldn’t blame someone for not trusting NBC.
I get it that the media is captured by billionaires but my point is that I don’t think that NBC, a network that has been around for 100 years, would put their reputation on the line to publish lies about a random wealthy YouTuber, who likely has lawyers on retainer that could sue for libel if they really were making stuff up.

As you yourself point out, NBC is not automatically trustworthy, but the choice of domain is not the reason why. The billionaire and corporate influence, combined with clickbait journalism is why.
Someone not trusting NBC is fine. Someone choosing to believe that it’s fake news just because it’s mainstream media when it refers to verifiabke facts and a mainstream personality is a failure of our society to adapt to the online world. A failure of education and a failure of media control and regulation.
