  • That page lists attacks in general, and not just at schools but also universities. Out of the 25 attacks listed for Germany (so since 1990), only 11 are shootings, and 14 have no deaths at all. So, you’re right, Germany does know what school schootings are.

    But compare this to a total of 67 (damn that number!) in the same timeframe in the UK ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_school_attacks_in_the_United_Kingdom ), despite the UK containg about 20 million less people than Germany. Unfortunately, Wikipedia doesn’t have a comparable list for France.

    But both of those numbers just cannot compare with the US, where just the school shootings that Wikipedia lists (not all attacks, just shootings) add up to 882 over the same time frame. And its not due to higer population, the US only has about 4 times as many people as Germany.

    Sorry, I realise you’re kinda just trying to say, school attacks do happen in Germay too, and you’re right. But you sent me down a rabbit hole. And the number of school shootings in Germany is so low that as a parent you can reasonably assume it won’t happen (and they are rarely big enough to land in the news), whereas in the US it seems to be something that everyone thinks about, that schols plan for, and that has a not inconsiderable chance of happening.

  • There is no faster plan.

    The only alternative would be internet over 4G, which is supposed to be faster, but the mobile connection at home is so unreliable, it wouldn’t be worth the added cost.

    I live a couple of houses down a driveway, so laying a new cable is too expensive to justify for just a few houses. This means I get to live with a cable that’s half a century old, and me and my neighbours (and others) are excluded from the recent local fiber internet initiative. Some neighbours just use Starlink, but my hatred of Elon and the sheer stupidity of using satelite internet in central Europe are stopping me.

    And, while I do live in a small village, I also have friends in Düsseldorf and in Berlin with even worse internet connections.

    I’d love to just switch to a faster plan. But mobile just doesn’t work here, and I’m not giving money to Elon, so … there is no faster plan.

    No, you underoverestimate the internet speeds in some parts of Germany. I get maybe 11 Mbit/s on a good day, about 5-6 Mbit/s average, and less if anyone else in the house is using it. And yes, that’s Mbit not MByte.

    According to Wikipedia, the slowest Blu-Ray speed is 36 Mbit/s, so about six times my average download speed. And Blu-Rays can go up to 576 Mbit/s.



  • I have a number of things running in the background after booting, so here’s some numbers for you:

    • Steam: 1.1GiB
    • Firefox: 1 GiB
    • Discord: 500-600 MiB
    • SchildiChat (Matrix Client): 300 MiB
    • KeePassXC: 180 MiB
    • KDE’s System Monitor (which I am using to get these values): 140 MiB

    In addition to that, there’s always a number of systems services, most of which use a negligible amount of memory, but here’s some I’m just picking out because I recognize what they do:

    • plasmashell (KDE Plasma): 380 MiB
    • kwin_wayland (also KDE Plasma): 70 MiB
    • Syncthing: 80 MiB
    • kdeconnectd: 30 MiB
    • pipewire: 7.5 MiB (though there are some other processes associated with pipewire in addition to the main one)
    • systemd-logind: 1.8 MiB
    • systemd: 3.7 MiB
    • cupsd: 2 MiB
    • XWayland: 45 MiB
    • Xorg: 40 MiB

    Of course, these are just a snapshot of the systems state, and can only really give you a very rough idea of how much memory something might use at one point in time.

    If you want to make your board game more complicated (probably not, but I like the idea, so I’m just throwing it in here), you could use it as an opportunity to teach virtual memory, segmentation, paging and internal vs external fragmentation. Maybe players get certain processes with memory requirements and have to fit them into their own main memory, and whoever can fit the most processes wins, or whoever cannot allocate memory for a new process looses. (I’m just writing down what’s coming out of my head, I don’t want to hijack your game idea, sorry.)
