I really like the idea of the Jolla and am seriously considering getting one. I’m also the exact target audience (Linux nerd, privacy conscious, FOSS advocate, want to own MY device fully, hate having to use a US-based duopoly in my current daily life).
That’s exactly why I don’t understand their decision to keep parts of their system closed. The overlap between people who want a Linux phone and who are OK with that Linux phone not being fully open seems to be tiny.

The reason is more that the config language that you have to learn if you want to use NixOS is the exact same you use to package applications for NixOS.
So any user is also just a tiny, non-intimidating step away from being a contributor and package maintainer.
I know for myself, I never packaged for the AUR - just seemed way to intimidating and a lot of new stuff to figure out - but I maintain a bunch of packages and modules in nixpkgs, and they’re all stuff that was “huh, this is cool but not packaged yet; alright, I’ll package it in my private config; oh that was easy, let’s upstream it”.
Nothing else even comes close, except the AUR, but even that not really:
No, I’m really happy with fish in general and use its syntax. The only times are things like e.g. a coworker sending me a 3-line script and then not being able to just copy, paste, enter.
Funny, I also went from packer to lazy.nvim, but then hopped off and redid my config in nix. Hadn’t actually heard about the default package manager. That seems like a good thing for the ecosystem!

(However, it still seems a bit silly to me. name="value" will prompt you to enter set name "value", with your exact name/value prefilled. As far as I know, it really is just syntax substitution; or am I wrong here? Are there semantic differences that can’t be translated?)

(Btw, highly recommend configuring neovim through nixvim if you’re already using nix. Incredibly stable. I had to fix one plugin or another all the time with plain nvim. Now, literally never. Plus, nix run github:<username>/<repo>#nvim on any nix-enabled system, and get dropped into your exact config, keybinds, theme, plugins and all. I’ve set it up to expose language-enabled variants by appending e.g. .go or .python to that command.)

Hab eine Geschichte die nur so halb zum Thema passt, aber egal:
Hatte eine OP anstehen, brauchte davor vom meiner Hausärztin ein paar Labore und ein EKG. Also Termin gemacht, hin, Blut abgenommen, und dann an die Maschine angeschlossen. Dauerte nicht lange und ich war fertig, alles wieder ab. Maschine druckt langen Bogen Papier aus.
Hausärztin wirft einen Blick drauf, zieht die Augenbrauen zusammen, starrt das Papier ein paar Sekunden lang mismutig an und macht ein misbilligendes “Hmmmmmmmmmmm”. Steht auf, geht nach draußen. Ich sitze 10 Minuten in dem Zimmer und dreh’ Däumchen.
Sie kommt mit dem EKG-Ausdruck und ihrem Kollegen wieder rein, meint “Also Frau smiletolerantly, ich habe mich jetzt eingehend mit meinem Kollegen beraten und wir sind uns beide einig. Sind Sie sich bewusst, dass Sie irgendwann innerhalb der letzten paar Wochen einen Herzinfarkt hatten?” (Randnotiz: Ich bin zu diesem Zeitpunkt 22 und habe eine völlig durchschnittliche Figur und Fitness.)
Ich bisschen bedeppert “ähhh… Nein? Sind Sie sich sicher? Kann ich die OP trotzdem machen?”, worauf mir versichert wurde, dass man sich sicher sein, nein definitiv keine OPs in meiner näheren und so-Gott-wolle mittelfristigen Zukunft, und stattdessen solle ich mir doch bitte vorne eine Kopie meiner Unterlagen abholen und in die Notaufnahme des Uniklinikums gefahren werden, pronto, keine Umwege, gehe nicht über Los. (“Das ist ja nicht so weit, das Laufe ich” vs. “Sie sollten sich auf jeden Fall ein Taxi nehmen” wurde dann in den Kompromiss “ich nehm nen E-Scooter” runtergehandelt.)
Ich also ab in die Uniklinik Düsseldorf, Anliegen vortragen, eingeordnet werden, dann 4h warten. Ich in der Zwischenzeit natürlich mittlerweile mit genug Panik, um das Herz wirklich zum Platzen zu bringen. Hab schon unter Tränen meine Partnerin kontaktiert, jetzt nicht im Glauben augenblicklich drauf zu gehen, aber hey, tolle Nachrichten sind das ja selbst im besten Fall nicht.
Kann endlich gesehen werden, erläutere nochmal die Situation, die Ärztin dort macht nochmal eine umfangreiche Anamnese. Schließlich neues EKG. Maschine druckt den Graphen aus. Ärztin sieht sich das an, wirkt nicht super happy, und stellt fest: “Nö da ist nichts. War vermutlich einfach eine Elektrode locker”.

I’m not really that purist - I’ll use closed-sourced software when necessary. For example, I have Davinci Resolve and Bitwig Studio installed. Sure I would prefer if those were open, but the target audience here are creatives, who largely won’t care.
On the other hand, Jolla is trying to sell exactly to those people that DO care, which makes the choice so hard to understand and support.
