  • red light ones are not great due to increased rear endings from some idiot slamming the brakes on when they should have gone through / people rushing and assuming the person in front will go through the yellow.

speed ones work great, when placed appropriately (i.e. on a street with an appropriate speed limit for the road design and in areas of higher pedestrian activity). I hate that Ontario just banned speed enforcement cameras, because that means a loss of revenue to pay for the road network maintenance, more police activity enforcing speed (which a camera does automatically all day long) which means police aren’t doing more important stuff and also it’s a waste of my tax dollars, and they will have to spend more of my tax dollars putting shittier speed reduction methods in place like speed bumps (annoying as fuck, bad for fuel economy, loud because people race from speed bump to speed bump, ineffective because people pay attention racing from speed bump to speed bump instead of to what’s going on around them, annoying for bicycles and people with towing trailers, loud when people telling trailers go over them, loud when regular cars go over them, bad for snow plows…)

now, this is just for speed enforcement, not coordinating traffic flow. although in a properly designed network, there are times that this can actually be achieved, unlike those light cycles on arterial roads that let you go through if you speed just a little bit but if you go the speed limit you hit every single red light

those are special gifts from when my neighbour across the street parks on the street on an obvious multiple-times-a-day plow day, and the plow repeatedly has to go around them and in doing so leaves extra crap on my driveway because it all slides off the plow as they turn around the parked car

  • most of the time when I get flashed back, it doesn’t even matter. their high beams aren’t any brighter than the low beams, they’re just aimed higher, and since their lowbeams are already aimed above my head, it doesn’t make a difference when they turn their high beams on to light up the tree tops

it still is pretty funny when you can tell that they’ve turned their high beams on by a tiny bit more light up above, but it has no effect on you. It’s a pretty clear indication that their low beams are too bright

  • tbh I’d rather drive by a 2010 car with high beams on than a 2020 car with lowbeam LEDs

and have done many times, it’s hilarious to be able to see better when a 2008 Corolla is coming towards me with high beams on that are perfectly adequate for lighting up the highway at speed, and a 2020 Corolla goes by after it and I can’t see the fucking road at all or anything around it or even where the 2020 car exactly is

this is so a pre-2010s problem

the new problem is LED headlights. I nearly hit somebody last week because I went when the light turned green and somebody was walking across the intersection on the other side, but completely invisible until the last second because of some asshole on the other side with LED headlights

I’ve actually used chat GPT (or was it Cursor? I dont remember now) to help write a script for a program with a very (to me, a non-programmer) convoluted, but decently well documented API.

it only got a few things right, but the key was that it got enough right for me to go and fix the rest. this was for a task I’d been trying to do every now and then for a few years. was nice to finally have it done.

but damn, does “AI” ever suck at writing the code I want it to. or maybe I just suck at giving prompts. idk. one of my bosses uses it quite a bit to program stuff, and he claims to be quite successful with it. however, I know that he barely validates the result before claiming success, so… “look at this output!” — “okay, but do those numbers mean anything?” — “idk, but look at it! it’s gotta be close!”

there are places that don’t follow a weekly schedule but rather another number of days, presumably because it’s considered a balance of lower cost and frequent enough pickup

I’m happy with my alternating garbage/cardboard and plastics/glass weeks, with the green bin picked up every week, though. seems like a perfect schedule — just enough time to get a bin of recycling worth putting out, and with the green bin coming weekly, I sometimes struggle to even get enough garbage to bother tying the bag up and putting it out

  • my membership is $120 and I get back, on average, $120 in the refund cheque every year

I told the lady asking me about my membership that I lost last year’s refund cheque, so they went out of their way to mail me all of those cheques. I didn’t ask for it - they just enough it up and then said “hey we see you didn’t spend the three years before that either, do you want those too?”

are some things more expensive? of course, just like anywhere. but the things I buy and some of the ‘exclusive’ products make it work it for me

fuck it’s worth it for dog food alone tbh, and my dogs are only 65lb combined. but my other favourites from there are bread, some of the meat & fish, frozen goods, and household disposables. far better pricing than Loblaws. and ofc I still aim for buying Canadian
