Arch isn’t necessarily unstable or “dreadful”. It’s a distro that requires the user to know what they’re doing and to be a tinkerer by nature. Whether this is a feature or a downside is dependent on the user.

But I agree with you, recommending an Arch based distro to someone who is not a tinkerer and just wants to use the PC - which is the vast majority of PC users - is a mistake.

That was never a “serious” question in that sense. It’s just a philosophical paradox.

The real answer is that you need to look at the ancestry tree. There wasn’t a moment that a chicken popped up, it was a gradual evolution between an ancestor and until a point that we decided “yup, that’s a chicken”.

I never met an american tourist, but I don’t think this question makes a lot of sense because both Europe and the EU have a lot of countries with different cultures. For example, here in Portugal we have the preconception that people in the north (germany, sweden, denmark, etc) are very quiet and mind their own business. So an american tourist would be loud compared to whose standards? Ours? The Germans? Etc

Now, what I heard a lot from many different people, both in real life and on the internet, is that american tourists tend to have a “self importance” air about them. A friend told me a story that an american tried to tip her dollars several times, even though they were told that she could only accept Euros.

Yup you’re right. That last part was more of an addendum for those that consider trying to find new forums.

Obviously, the voting system is only one part of the story. It by itself won’t dictate if a community will be healthy or toxic; other things like the community culture and mods will have a heavier impact. But in my experience, in all the places I’ve been in, the voting system is one of the ingredients that does have an effect on the cake overall.

Sometimes it even triggers an honest discussion.

In my experience, that’s what tends to happen in more traditional forums.

Voting systems are great for threads where the discussions is about problem with an objective solution, but for more subjective topics it just kills discussions.

I recommend anyone that used to be a lot on Reddit, here on Lemmy and/or other forums with karma systems to try out forums without them. Trust me you’ll notice the difference.

Niche forums with small communities tend to be best, and a lot less toxic.
