I started with Tubular but switched over to PipePipe. They are barely distinguishable but PipePipe seems to have a bigger userbase and frequent updates. The reason I use them over NewPipe itself is that they have SponsorBlock integrated, which I view as a requirement for using YouTube.

The point is that today the term only serves to delegitimize what should be accepted practice (installing whatever software you want on the machine you paid for) by making it sound like some secondary/shady behavior. Thus allowing phone manufacturers to maintain their walled gardens and control over consumers.

PipePipe allows me to watch videos without signing in that ask for “sign in to confirm you’re not a bot” on the normal YouTube interface.

There may be videos that are age-restricted or otherwise account-locked that it can’t access I think, but I haven’t run into them.

Often the newer thing that ‘does more’ loses some of the charm/vibe that the old thing had
