When I read it, I was frustrated that it was a socialist dystopia, but I think it holds up as a valid critique of surveillance-state authoritarianism, regardless of the x-coordinate on the political compass.

I’m an American, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I can imagine being proud of one’s country’s institutions. When a nation actually pulls off democratic republicanism, it’s something to be proud of. When a nation’s institutions protect civil rights and promote egalitarianism, it’s something to be proud of because that takes a lot to set up. Ultimately, a government is something built by a community and shaped by a culture. The people at the top would like to fool you into believing that government is a clash of wills between politicians, but they’re just the tip of the iceberg.
Although our highest offices have been corrupt for a long time (always?), Project 2025 dismantled many of our proudest institutions.
I’ll let him know, thanks! I think he usually just uses D*scord with his friends
Oh neat, I hadn’t even thought of that! I think it’ll be a hard sell to switch him back, but I’ll keep this option in mind. I’m just hoping he grows out of it haha.
My brother has been interested in switching to Linux but he’s into those kind of games too. I’ll recommend him to try it out!

For me, it was definitely a hard thing I was supposed to work through. There are things that don’t work as well after transitioning to GrapheneOS, but more than anything it’s just helped me use my phone less (which was an ongoing goal of mine). I do most of my banking on my laptop now, which is probably better for my mental health than constantly checking my finances and stressing myself out. Outings are a lot more enjoyable now. I also switched from an unlimited data plan to a plan with 2GB a month, so I just leave my mobile data off unless I really need it.
I realized that I’m not going to win him over by being a jerk about it. Sometimes, all you can do is give people the space to come to the right conclusion themselves.
I built a computer for my uncle and his kids and installed Linux on it. My cousin wanted to play Fortnite, and I tried to pitch it to him as a feature instead of a bug. But a couple weekends ago, I caved and installed dang Windows 11 for him.

When I was in undergrad, I used to walk to and from my jujutsu dojo a mile away from my dorm. The way back had a big hill leading up to my dorm; I would start out at the bottom wearing a big coat and end up at the top with the coat tied around my waist! The weight of the winter gear and the difficulty of trudging through fresh snow just makes it that much more of a workout.
My laptop is Mint and it’s never given me audio issues. My gaming rig is Nobara and the only audio issue I’ve had with it is that I forgot to switch the output to the TV.
