No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•When if ever did "Throw Money at The Problem:" actually work? Instead of being about 75 percent useless?
1·3 days agoYes, there is empirical evidence that giving people money directly is effective, just denying it doesn’t refute that: https://ubiadvocates.org/9-successful-ubi-pilot-programs-that-will-change-your-views-on-free-money/
As for why that is, poverty is partly about mindset and decision making, but all of that is strongly influenced by the effects of being in a financially precarious situation and being around others who are. Just knowing that you aren’t at risk of your life falling apart because of relatively minor problems makes an enormous difference and allows people practically and psychologically to think beyond the short term and not get taken advantage of financially.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How do you fight abandonment issues when people keep abandoning you
3·9 days agoI think you are correct to identify it as a contradiction, and shouldn’t fight your feelings. For lots of people absence of durable connections inherently just hurts you and you can’t change that by pretending like it doesn’t. How you are treated is experienced as an opinion, and in a real sense it is one. Something that helps to cope with it though is realizing that the opinions about you that society expresses by being such an environment are disingenuous and deluded. So much about the way people think about and treat each other is wrong, both factually and in terms of whether it makes for a good way to live, but even if you can’t ignore it you can object to it through the way you treat yourself and others.
Could also go with accusing them of projecting and rescinding the offer on that basis
Would make sense except they have different clothes and get grey hair
I like this, but it is really stupid
I only really get brown lentils, the two things I tend to use them for are the main ingredient in soup (along with carrots onions potatoes etc), and for fried lentils on rice.
The utility of gun rights as a potential defense against tyranny isn’t proven to be zero by the existence of tyranny, because guns are not a complete solution. I think it’s likely they would be rounding up more people by now, with less expense and difficulty, if Americans didn’t have guns.

“man if I had a goth girl I could just pee in her mouth instead of the bathroom” joke. Like that could even be funny to me I guess but this format just felt… Like they drew her on her knees first and invented a scenario around it after.
The focus of the comic is more on the male character with more panels showing his face and emphasizing his escalating reactions to being teased with various techniques (the squiggle line on the dialogue bubble in the third panel, the head turn line, the poses etc). What I like about it is how it depicts a relationship dynamic between them where he gets easily embarrassed, the goth girl doesn’t, and she takes advantage of this to mess with him. It’s obviously meant to be titillating but to me it does not seem like the sort of comic that has no substance other than that.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What’s a “life hack” that actually made your life worse?
5·16 days agoActual avocado life hack: buy way too many avocados, then when they decide to be ripe on their own time, cut them into cubes and freeze them. Now you have avocado on demand whenever you want.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why don't they just make NFTs of all the Middle Eastern oil and sell it on the blockchain, thereby circumventing the strait of Hormuz?
6·18 days agoOil is fungible, so Oilcoin would make more sense than a non-fungible token. It might be tricky to figure out a way to transport physical fuel over the blockchain, but annoying details like that are what vibecoding is for.

1·20 days agoI’m pretty sure caffeine is a performance enhancing drug for a lot of jobs so no chance of that. Plus like you allude to, it can be synthetically manufactured for cheap without worrying about growth conditions or import of coffee beans.
It isn’t, it’s a little bit more:
$15,960

I close bathroom doors, mainly to keep in the habit of doing it
