No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why are those long planks of wood called "2 by 4s"?
11·8 days agoInspector came to look at the house for some reason and was impressed to see a house built in the 50’s with a giant length of walnut(?) something like 8”x 12” by 20’
I have an old house on my property that has a similar piece of wood holding everything up.
They don’t/can’t build like that anymore.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is there a chance America one day will elect a Progressive? Or will we keep going the elder dipshit route?
4·10 days agoYes. If you look at the last couple of elections and when they were born you’ll notice an outlier that got that vote because they promised something different.
It’s doable, but it seems like the current voters like people born at the tail end of WW2.

1·10 days agoWhat has your own research found?
After a week the “German” food was repetitive. The “non-local” food was pretty unique as it was still tempered to German tastes and available food stock.
I definitely was looking for menus that had German items that were new to me but it wasn’t that easy by the end of the 2nd week.
The German food in the US doesn’t get close to the German restaurant experience though. The old buildings, the efficiency in getting you in, the abrupt “time to leave” even if you’re not done. Buying a keg of beer for the table.
No. Most restaurants have a selection of flavors. Germany was sausages on kraut, in water, or pounded out chicken/pork.
I went to Germany not long ago and was surprised by how every restaurant had the same exact menu. Had to find the foreign restaurants to get other flavors.

Comic Strips@lemmy.world•Gameplay mechanics were also a lot better with more replayability.
5·19 days agoI remember pouring over my grandpas falcon3.0 manual.
Also a DOS manual he had. On one hand it was cool but on the other, things are so complex that they wouldn’t fit into a manual. And they go out of date as soon as they are printed due to changes.

They are big enough to hire OS devs and run their own Linux distro

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How would I improve Wifi consistency within my house?
5·2 months agoInstead of chaining them together, try to put the “router” in a central location and do what’s needed to limit your repeaters to a single hop away from the router. Chaining them together will lead to problems.
A proper mesh system will work better than repeaters. Some systems can use powerline networking to use your existing power outlets as a network, but it’s not always that great.
Some locations such as apartments/condos have really bad interfering neighbors on 2.4ghz. If that’s your situation then using 5ghz exclusively might help.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What's going to happen to gas stations as cars electrify?
2·2 months agoThey will close. If you look at how many gas stations there are you’ll see that they are everywhere. I was driving through Iowa and saw an intersection that had 6 gas stations.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•W10 EoL and possibly switching to Linux (various tech questions)
2·2 months agoYou can easily search for news on Linux malware. Most recently npm was affected.
Npm is used by a lot of software, so updating your software from valid sources could easily infect your machine.
It’s also dead simple to misconfigure something on Linux, like your firewall, leaving your machine exposed to the internet. Linux doesn’t bother you nearly as much as windows does when it comes to updating and restarting. Windows used to be that way too but had to adapt to the changing threat landscape.
With VMs you can try as many at once as your system can support, with less risk than booting up on a livecd, and the ability to switch between them without having to reboot.
Moving files manually is fine.

I had to read this twice since the wall and the inside of the hat have the same wallpaper.
