Mostly accurate, although the flight delays tend to be announced one short delay at a time. “We’re going to be a few minutes late pulling out from the gate.” “We missed out takeoff window, so we’re going to have a 20 minute delay.” “We need to refile our paperwork, so we’re heading back to the gate.” “Ground crew changed shift, so we need another 45 minutes.” And so on…

Yeah, if they announced 72hrs you could just leave the airport and go do somethings else. Had a 4hr delay once and I used the opportunity to leave and get something nice to eat somewhere food doesn’t cost 5x more for no reason

Can’t leave, everyone has already boarded and they’ve closed the doors.

Also, no leaving your seat until after takeoff.

That has always been the most fucked up part about flight delays. They get everybody boarded and seated, plane is ready to go, maybe you start taxiing, and then you’re just sitting there waiting for potentially hours.

I refuse to believe that returning the plane to the terminal jetway and allowing the passengers to deboard is some kind of unsolvable conundrum or major issue that can’t be surmounted with better logistics. They have never been able to properly explain why they can’t do exactly that, other than that they don’t want to do the paperwork.

They’d stop doing that if by law they had to give a free meal if they delay more than 30 minutes your flight while you are sitting.

You’re playing with fire. They can delay it 6 hours, then 20 minutes later something changes and they leave. No guarantee the delay doesn’t get shorter, safest thing is to stay at the gate.

Passengers should gather and elect a (volunteer) sacrificial lamb to make a food run at a good local place. If the delay holds, everyone gets Pad Thai. If the plane delay suddenly gets cancelled, they’re out what they chipped in but are happy, and the lamb either has the unspent cash or enough Pad Thai to share with the other people waiting with them for the next flight.

So true. As a teen my bf and I accidentally ruined his big sister’s birthday because of this. We were waiting for a flight that kept getting delayed all day and by the time it finally got cancelled, his sister had to postpone her plans to drive to the airport to get us. She was all dressed up in a sexy anime-esque/lolita style and it was clear we ended up cockblocking her birthday date. I felt so bad, but there was nothing we could do.
