sure you can just make a new one, but all of your old posts and comments won’t show up. Not to mention your DMs too

it seems kinda counterproductive to the goal of lemmy being federation where you can just move to another instance if yours gets bought by Elon or an admin goes corrupt, but it’s not made simple to do that.

I’ve seen many people be on lemmy.ml that would switch but they’ve been using it since the start of lemmy and they don’t wanna restart

I know mastodon has a little “hey this user has moved to @user@newinstance” popup but that’s not really that elegant either

    Also, isn’t this something you could just do anyways, with your own instance? There’s plenty of small instances and I don’t like the concept of users not being credible unless they’re from a well-known instance. Unless of course the instance name is some jibberish domain but that’s kind of obvious…
    Also couldn’t this be mitigated by having something like a “this user used to be xyz@uvw” tag on their profile, which (being managed by the receiving instance) would not be something the source server or user have power over, and that way you can still see if they came from a cheap gibberish domain.

      Neither do I but it is what it is.

      Same thing with email servers. I could create my own email server and fake entire conversation with anyone in my inbox/sent folders but I can’t do it on a server I don’t control like gmail.

      It’s a good idea but it would need to support multiple migrations. (user x migrated from a@instance migrated from b@instance migrated from c@instance …)
