I think the guy who enters the water in the second panel and the old man on the canoe are different people i.e. the reflection is actually the glasses guy who became very large

I don’t think that’s a reflection. I’m pretty sure that’s supposed to be him underwater, having realized his dream, looking up.
Yeah, I mean the character had glasses the whole way through for continuity.
As for OP, I think it is just a beautiful rendition of completely following through on the childhood dream, and parents supporting it.
I think it’s a beautiful and surreal statement on how wonderful it can be to follow your dreams and become even what people tell you is impossible.
