I bought a house ten years ago. I’ve locked the mortgage payments at ~$1000. I’ve since moved countries and been renting it out for the last four years. The current tenants pay ~$2200 and their own utilities. Seven more years and my mortgage is no more.
There are many costs and processes involved with owning. Not everyone wants to own or is going to be in a place long enough where it makes sense to own. Getting rid of all landlords introduces its own problems.

Being a landlord is kinda cringe ngl

The costs are still always less than owning because the owner is making a profit so this doesn’t make much sense.
The only good argument is that people might not want to be in a spot for long.
The costs are less long term as an owner but owners are also responsible for repairs. As a renter you only need to cover monthly rent.
And as you noted not everyone wants to be or will be in a single place for long.
Landlordposting from another country while you pay your mortgage on a property you don’t live in using someone else’s income
On .ml of all places 🤣
