I teach an OSHA safety course and they have a statistic that 80% of workplace injuries are caused by slipping/tripping or ladders. There’s an entire chapter devoted to HOW to use all the myriad types of ladders safely… it’s actually pretty amazing that such a dangerous tool is sooooo common in everyday life. Injuries related to cuts from saws etc are kinda common but those are rarely life-threatening… falling from elevated height will wreck you!

on the slipping/tripping side, i am friends with someone who either is or used to be the world’s foremost expert on knocking over old people (she both loves and hates when i describe her PhD that way). like 2/3 falls are because of vision problems. keep your eyes healthy and your vision prescriptions as current as you can afford!

I worked as a metal roofer for a bit, ladders were the scariest part (okay unharnessed on a wet steel roof is scarier). But most of the injuries I saw were ladders. Like if we had the choice, climb up scaffolding or use a man lift.
